বাবা লোকনাথ

Loknath Brahmachari’s Chakla Temple holds immense significance as a pilgrimage site for Hindus. Serenely situated in the idyllic village of Chakla, on the outskirts of Kolkata, India, the temple stands as a homage to the esteemed spiritual figure, Baba Loknath Brahmachari. The Temple’s magnificence is awe-inspiring, covering an extensive stretch of land and crafted entirely from the finest marble stone.

The Birth Controversy of Loknath Baba

There exists a dispute concerning the birthplace of Loknath Baba, with Kachua Dham and Chakla Dham. Chakla and Kachua are situated at an approximate distance of 15 km from each other. In the year 1980, the Loknath Sevasram Sangha was established, taking the initiative to construct the Chakla Temple in 1981. As per the assertions of this Sangha, Chakla Dham is upheld as the authentic birthplace of Loknath Baba. Nevertheless, a legal dispute arose when Nityagopal Saha filed a case in the High Court. In light of this legal proceeding, the Court’s verdict ultimately recognized Kachua Dham as the confirmed birthplace of Loknath Baba.

Loknath Baba’s Early Years

Baba Loknath Brahmachari was born on August 31, 1730, to parents Ram Narayan and Kamala Devi. He was the fourth child in their family. In his early years, Loknath’s father nurtured a fervent wish for his son to embrace the life of a Brahmachari. Conversely, Loknath’s mother grappled with the idea of bidding farewell to her cherished son. Despite her reluctance, Loknath embraced discipleship under Achariya Ganguly during the Upanayana Ceremony, a significant day. The day also marked the commencement of his friend Benimadhab Chakraborty’s spiritual odyssey. Initial lessons from Guru Bhagwan Ganguly unfolded in the spiritual ambience of Kalighat.

Post these foundational teachings, they commenced a transformative journey, embarking on a trek that led them on foot toward the majestic Himalayas. Over the ensuing years, Loknath immersed himself in the profound practice of yoga, diligently following the guidance of his Guru amid the serene, snow-covered landscapes of the Himalayan wilderness. After a prolonged period of unwavering dedication to sadhana (spiritual practice), Loknath reached a transformative juncture, encountering a vision of Brahmadarshan, a profound milestone in his spiritual sojourn.

Embarking on a profound journey, Baba Loknath Brahmachari, accompanied by Guru Bhagwan Ganguly and Benimadhab, ventured on an extraordinary pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. Embarking on a vast exploration, they traversed diverse terrains in their quest to absorb the wisdom of the Holy Quran, under the guidance of an esteemed teacher. Along the desert trails en route to Medina, their path converged with Abdul Gaffar, a yogi of remarkable prowess. Amidst the sacred landscapes of Mecca, Guru Bhagwan Ganguly sensed the opportune moment to transcend his ageing physical form, marking a pivotal chapter in their spiritual odyssey.

An Unveiling Journey: From Mahatirtha Kashidham to the Culmination at Manikarnika Ghat

Subsequently, the trio – Baba Loknath Brahmachari, Guru Bhagwan Ganguly, and Benimadhab returned to Mahatirtha Kashidham. It was here that Guru Bhagwan Ganguly entrusted his two disciples to Sri Trailanga Swami (also known as Hitlal Misra). Tragically, Guru Bhagwan Ganguly’s earthly journey reached its culmination as he fervently engaged in the transformative practice of Mahajapa, within the sacred precincts of the Manikarnika Ghat.

Journeying Across Countries with Guru Trailanga Swami

Following Guru Bhagwan Ganguly’s departure from this world, Loknath Brahmachari, along with Benimadhab and Trailanga Swami, embarked on an extraordinary expedition to the Western world, travelling solely on foot. Their odyssey took them through numerous countries, spanning different regions of Europe, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, and other distant locales. These three esteemed yogis traversed vast stretches, even journeying across the formidable Himalayas. However, as time passed, the inevitable moment arrived when the paths of these three yogis were destined to diverge.

A Visit to Loknath Brahmachari’s Chakla Temple for Worship

Having heard about the magnificence of the Chakla Temple, one fine morning in January 2023, I embarked on a journey to the Temple from Sodepur, Kolkata.

Though the road presented its share of challenges, the captivating sight of lush green vegetable fields and golden mustard flowers lining the roadside painted an enchanting backdrop.

Attendants efficiently managed parking without any fees, underscoring the community spirit. Following their guidance, I parked and procured puja materials from a shop, a gesture that reciprocated the parking convenience.

These coupons facilitate participation in a meal offering. During this time, the Rajbhog meal is served, and those in a hurry can opt for takeaway packets by paying an additional fee for packaging.

After acquiring the coupons, we were ushered into a dedicated room, the atmosphere charged with the presence of devoted worshippers. As the door closed, the room filled to capacity, forming a congregation of ardent worshippers. Placing our puja materials and a piece of paper with our details in front of the idol of Baba Loknath Brahmachari, we awaited our turn with a sense of reverence and devotion. A Priest conducted the puja on behalf of all of us.
